High Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a risk factor for developing heart disease and stroke so it is advisable to try to improve your cholesterol and risk factors.

Diet is the most important factor for reducing cholesterol. It is recommended to ensure an adequate intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, healthy protein sources (fish/seafood, low fat dairy products, low-fat poultry without the skin and nuts) and non-tropical vegetable oils. Equally it is important to try to avoid saturated fats, refined carbohydrates and added salt. Processed foods will frequently be high in these.

Exercise is also important and it is recommended that you take 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, for example 30 min x5 times per week. You should aim to be a little bit out of breath while exercising so that it is difficult to hold a conversation. If you have other medical issues you may need to tailor this.

Other factors that are important include maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding any tobacco products and keeping any alcohol consumption to moderation.

It may be worthwhile to discuss your heart health and risk with you at an appointment in the surgery, particularly if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure,  smoking or a strong family history of heart disease.

If you have any concerns regarding your cholesterol or other issue, please do not hesitate to contact the surgery for an appointment. Otherwise we may be able to discuss when you next attend the surgery.
